Sleep is vital for every creature irrespective of gender. Many studies say that women sleep more than men. Did you know Sleep patterns differ between men and women?  According to some researchers, women require more sleep because they use their brains more than men. Let’s dive into the importance of sleep for men.

Do Men Need More Sleep than Women?

Have you ever thought about why men fall asleep so fast? Here are some reasons why-

  1. Hormones- Hormones play a major role in creating sleep differences between men and women. Shifts in hormone production during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause can create significant sleeping problems.
  2. Health problems- Sleep can be affected by underlying health problems, many of which won’t affect men easily. For instance, women easily get diagnosed with depression and anxiety.
  3. Gender-biased influences- Gender norms play an important role in sleep patterns. Environment, social, cultural influences, and even work schedules can impact sleep.

Effects of Not Getting Enough Sleep on Men

Effects of not enough sleep can cause the following health hazards in men

Increased Risk of Obesity– Less sleep in men can not only lead to obesity but also causes a higher risk of diabetes.

Affects Mental Health– Lack of sleep can take a toll on mental health. One night of missed sleep can weaken your immune system, and affect the next day’s mood.

Affects Immune System– Your immune system releases proteins called cytokines. Some of the cytokines help to promote sleep. Lack of sleep decreases the production of cytokines.

Higher Risk of CancerSleep deprivation links to growth of cancer in men. A study on 400,000 American men over three decades found that men who get three to five hours of sleep frequently were more likely to die of prostate cancer compared to men who were getting seven hours of sleep.

Cardiovascular Problems– Men who sleep less than 7 hours are more likely to get cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and stroke.

Lack of Fertility– A study found that men who sleep less had a 25% reduction in infertility. And extra hours of sleep can also affect fertility.
