Cooking Tips for People with Diabetes

Do you suffer from diabetes? Do you feel like you are missing out on taste? There are some particular cooking tips for people with diabetes which when followed ensure that you don’t miss out on yummy pasta and mouth-watering sweets. Your cooking style just needs a makeover. For those who are living with diabetes, following this practice can be a matter of life and death. But it’s not that hard when you start to properly control your intake.

Few Cooking Tips for People with Diabetes:

Cut down to Low-Fat

Many dairy products used in cooking are high in fat. You can lower the fat without compromising the taste. Instead of whole milk, use skim milk or non-fat milk. Instead of sour cream, try nonfat or low-fat plain yogurt, buttermilk.

Fat is not a bad thing. But it’s better to limit the amount of fat and calories you consume. Too much fat can lead to weight gain and this can make your blood sugar harder to control. Choose lean cuts of meat and try to avoid the skin in poultry, better grill your food than frying them. Always measure your portions before cooking.

Fill It with Nuts

Intake of nuts like walnuts, almonds, pistachios, and peanuts will be very helpful for people with diabetes. Try to add these to your daily meal. These nuts contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in them, which can lower your LDL (low-density lipoproteins)

But avoid sugar-coated or salted nuts. They are high in calories and can lead to weight gain, and the ones that are honey roasted and chocolate-covered are high in carbs and definitely not a good choice for people with diabetes.

Add a Protein

Include a protein with meals and snacks. Like fiber, protein can prevent spikes in blood sugar by slowing digestion and serves to keep you fuller. While following the cooking tips for diabetes choose lean cuts of meat and seafood for animal protein. If you are looking for meat-free options, you can always rely on some vegetables and also, nuts, eggs, low-fat dairy products.

Cook Your Meals

Home cooking is the best. You can simply go out in the neighborhood and buy some fresh fish or meat and cook it at home. You can boil the meat and vegetables instead of frying them. Outside foods have added fat and sugars which will boost your sugar level. When you prepare your meal, you can measure your intake and can control your blood sugar much better.
