Skin Care products for treating Eczema

Eczema, otherwise known as atopic dermatitis is a skin condition that makes the skin itchy and red. Eczema comes under autoimmune conditions as the cause of itchiness is not known.

Though causes of eczema are unknown, factors such as genetics, immune system activation, environmental triggers, and hormonal changes play a role in patients who suffer from eczema.

Eczema mainly occurs in the face and neck region. According to the National Eczema Society, cosmetic and skin products can trigger facial eczema as the skin on our face is among the most sensitive.

Severe itching, scaly patches, skin dryness, and small bumps which may leak fluid are some of the most common eczema symptoms that one should be aware of.

Certain skincare routines help in controlling the condition while some others increase the risk. Check out what to use and what to avoid.

What to use?

One can manage eczema by using certain skincare products which soothe your skin and repair damage. These eczema treatment creams can help control the condition but not cure the inflammation completely.

Emollients and Moisturizer:

Ingredients such as shea butter, glycerine, and lanolin have a healing nature and they can protect your skin from itching and other eczema symptoms.

Acids:

Hyaluronic acid is the best acid for treating eczema as it is available naturally in the connective tissues in our bodies. Yet the acid storage in our body tends to reduce due to age and environmental factors such as air pollution. Buy a product that contains hyaluronic acid as it can easily bind with water molecules and improves skin hydration.

In addition, glycolic acid is the best exfoliator for treating eczema. As exfoliators help in removing dead cells, glycolic acid does this and makes sure the skin doesn’t get irritated due to scrubbing. This is because glycolic acid is a gentle chemical exfoliator. But remember, don’t use  exfoliators daily as this may worsen your skin. Prefer using it once or twice a week.

Niacinamide:

Experts advise applying serum or cream which has niacinamides before applying any makeup on your skin. The component reduces inflammation and minimizes pores in your skin. Niacinamide is also known as Vitamin B3, which plays an important role in treating many skin problems.

What to avoid?

Eczema treatment creams are widely available in the market. Choose the one which suits your skin tone. Certain preservatives and fragrances can add fuel to the fire by causing inflammation.

Preservatives:

Preservatives such as methylparaben or butylparaben induce bacterial growth and cause skin inflammation. Switch to natural preservatives such as neem oil and seed extract of grapefruit. With this, you can lessen the itchiness and other eczema symptoms.

Fragrances:

Creams or lotions which come with fragrances are not advisable for people who suffer from eczema. Read the product label and ensure whether it is “fragrance-free”. Buy products that are suitable for sensitive skin to be on the safer side. This way you can avoid flaring up the condition.

Seek a doctor’s advice before applying any new skincare product to your skin.
