Do Spouses Lose More Weight Together Than Alone?

Weight loss is not as easy as it sounds. A new study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2020 reveals that spouses shed more weight together than alone. Many times we have come across pictures of couples becoming fit together on the Internet. But, this is the first time proper research has been done to prove that a heart attack survivor with a participating partner can lose more pounds than a survivor who’s left alone.

How Did the Study Take Place?

Around 824 heart attack survivors were split into two groups. The aim of the study was to make lifestyle changes to these individuals and check how they respond to the intervention program. Weight loss, physical activity, and smoking cessation were the key attributes of this program.

It was found that the individuals who had participated with their partners showed signs of improvement healthwise and lost more pounds than their counterparts who participated alone. As a result of the study, it was concluded that a partner’s influence on a cardiac attack survivor helps him/ her become physically and mentally fit. On the other hand, there wasn’t much improvement in individuals whose partner didn’t contribute to the survivor’s weight loss journey.

Ms. Lotte Verweij, a Ph.D. student at the University of Amsterdam said, “If partners contribute to adopting healthy habits, it could become an important recommendation in avoiding recurrent heart attacks”.

What Are the Benefits of Losing Weight Together?

  1. There are more chances of shedding pounds when you have a company. The odds are even higher when it is your spouse who is participating with you in the weight loss program.
  2. Shedding weight would no longer be a burden when you have your partner doing the same routine as you. Walking, jogging, or doing aerobics together is a lot more fun when done with your partner than doing alone.
  3. You guys will make a healthy family. Your kids too will be inspired from your lifestyle practices.
  4. You get to spend more time with your spouse. Yes, participating in a weight loss journey together strengthens your bond.
