4 Myths about prenatal vitamins

When we visit the gynecologist the first time after we learn that we are pregnant the first thing we are asked to buy and consume are prenatal vitamins. These vitamins are essential for the proper development of the baby in the womb. However there are a few myths about prenatal vitamins that are doing the rounds.

Here are 4 myths about prenatal vitamins debunked:

Myth 1: You need to take prenatal vitamins only when you get pregnant
You should start taking prenatal vitamins even before you get pregnant, especially in those cases when you are sure of trying to get pregnant. Of course nothing can be done in the cases of women who get pregnant unplanned. You should take these ideally – Before you get pregnant, throughout you pregnancy and while you are breast feeding.

Developmental milestones happen in the first weeks of pregnancy when the mother is not even aware that she is pregnant which is why if your pregnancy is planned start popping the vitamins early.
Post-delivery the vitamins are passed on to your baby thorough your breast milk. Do not skip on your prenatal vitamins unless you want yourself and your baby to miss out of key nutrients.

Myth 2: All prenatal vitamins are the same
The composition differs from brand to brand. Check the labels of the prenatal multivitamins and see if they contain the daily recommended allowances.
Always keep in mind your doctor’s prescription and never overdo it.

Myth 3: Prenatal vitamins will make you feel healthy and strong
These pills might make you feel sick and nauseous. You should include adequate fluid intake, proper food and stay active if you want to keep the side effects away.
If the symptoms don’t stop no matter what you do then consult your doctor who might split the vitamins in a more tolerable formula.

Myth 4: Prenatal vitamins do not mean that you neglect your diet
Prenatal vitaminsare only to supplement your diet and some vitamins are absorbed by the body only by consuming food along with the vitamins. A healthy diet will help the expectant mother to maintain a healthy weight and support the baby’s growth along with setting up good habits of eating clean and healthy.
