10 Common Food Allergies and 5 Treatments

What are the most common food allergies experienced by both children and adults in America? Find out the common home remedies for these food allergies now to spare an ER trip next time onward.

Common Food Allergy Triggers

A runny nose after eating spicy food, feeling gassy after consuming beans are symptoms of food intolerance or sensitivity. Readout our blog about food allergies vs food intolerance first to understand your condition first. Here is a list of common food allergens that could induce hives, rashes, red eyes, or make you gasp for every single breath:

    • Peanuts: These are actually legumes and the American genes make most people allergic to them.
    • Sea Food: Most adults are allergic
    • Milk: This allergy is common in children
    • Soy: This is grown far from home and is not made for the American lifestyle.
    • Eggs: Mostly affects children but a majority of them outgrow the allergy.
    • Nuts and spices: People allergic to tree nuts automatically become allergic to certain spices due to cross-reactivity.
    • Seeds: Sesame and sunflower seeds bind with the IgE antibodies and this can cause allergic reactions in humans.
  • Meat: A bite from the Lone Star tick is the reason behind most meat allergies in America.
  • Corn: A protein named Zein present in corn and corn pollen causes the allergy resulting in hives.
  • Gelatin: Since this is made from animal skin and tissues, the vaccine given to these animals can create an allergic reaction in humans.

Food Allergy Symptoms

Here are a few common symptoms of a food allergy you should look out for:

  • Sudden sneezes, dry coughs, hiccups, or runny nose
  • Itchy, red, or watery eyes
  • Rashes or itches on the body or inside ears
  • Funny taste even after gargling
  • Upset stomach, cramps, nausea, or diarrhoea
  • Feeling stuffy, difficult to breathe, and slurred speech
  • Swollen pr tingling lips, tongue, or throat
  • Feeling dizzy or confused
  • Uneven or weak heartbeat

Serious allergic reactions like anaphylaxis or asthma can also manifest in seconds and you will need an EpiPen or inhaler handy at all times. Most allergic reactions appear in a matter of seconds while some take an hour or so.

Treatment of Allergies

Sometimes it gets impossible to avoid food with potential allergens when you are unaware of the ingredients. Here are a few ways to cure food allergies at home:

  • Probiotic food: Allergies occur when your immune system mistakes a nutritive protein for a foreign particle.  Consuming probiotic food like yoghurt will train the immune system and reduce symptoms like upset stomach to a great extent.
    • Vitamin C: You can cleanse your body both internally and externally using Vitamin C to overcome fatigue and dull skin after an allergic reaction.
  • Tea: Cure a runny nose, rashes, or itches by drinking stinging nettle tea daily. Ginger lemon tea and green tea are also equally beneficial and relaxing.
  • Carrot and Cucumber: Both of them are highly anti-allergic and can make you feel at ease in a matter of hours.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Your immune system produces histamine causing an allergy.  Apple cider vinegar is high in antihistamine and can help in reducing the symptoms.

You can opt for over-the-counter allergy medicines or get prescription drugs for instant recovery. Make sure you are aware of the side effects before consuming them.
