5 Things you need to know about IVF

Childless couples often opt to try out various assisted reproductive technologies, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
IVF treatments can be physically, emotionally and financially taxing. Before you embark on this choice, it’s important for prospective patients to be as informed as possible.

Here are 5 things you need to know about IVF before considering this type of fertility treatment:

1) Research

Before deciding to pursue IVF, you should try to understand the treatment process and what is involved in each step. Being well informed is the best way to be mentally prepared for the emotional and physical changes that IVF can bring. Success rates vary from clinic to clinic, so don’t be afraid to ask what your chances of having a baby are with a particular treatment.
You should look into whether your employee benefit plans or insurance cover these expenses or if you have to pay for them out of your own pocket, as IVF is costly.

2) You need to be healthy

Adopting a balanced diet and fitness program is the best way to start any fertility journey. Studies have shown that women who are in better physical and emotional health have the highest chance of success with IVF.
Smoking, excessive drinking and being obese can reduce the success rate of the treatment.

3) Timing is everything

IVF can be physically and emotionally stressful. DO not start an IVF treatment when you are stressed out or going through a major life crisis. IVF will not work when a woman is stressed out.

4) Build a support system

If you are going to go for this treatment it’s important to have a strong support network of family and friends to turn to when times are particularly challenging as IVF can take a toll on women both physically and emotionally.

5) Stay positive and be realistic

Women till they reach the age of 35 have higher chances of getting pregnant both naturally or through assisted reproductive technologies.

Factors such as age, weight, lifestyle habits and general health will determine your likelihood of success with IVF.
Just remember the sooner the better.
