The federal government lifts the ban on nursing home visitors and allows people to visit and spend time with their loved ones no matter whether the guests have done their vaccines or not. Centres for Medicare & Medical Services (CMS) recommends nursing homes to allow indoor visitors at all times and all residents except for some circumstances. Outdoor visits are not completely banned and it’s still preferred based on priority.
“Facilities should allow indoor visitation at all times and for all residents (regardless of vaccination status), except for a few circumstances when visitation should be limited due to a high risk of COVID-19 transmission,” said the guidance from the Centres of Medicare & Medical Services (CMS).
CMS also recommends facilities, residents and visitors adhere to the principles of COVID-19 infection protocol which includes physical distancing and visiting outdoors. This is the simplest and safest way to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“C.M.S. recognizes the psychological, emotional and physical toll that prolonged isolation and separation from family have taken on nursing home residents and their families,” says CMS chief medical officer Lee A. Fleisher
According to CMS, nearly 530,000 people nationally have died of COVID-19. People/patients in the nursing home represent only about 1% of the nation’s population yet 130,00 nursing home residents and 1,600 nursing staffs have died of COVID-19
The best way to help your loved ones is to stay indoors. You can contact your loved ones through phone and video calls. Use technology to build the gap. If you like to visit them in person, know about the convenient time to visit and the health status of the person.
Get health information and the progress of your loved ones up-to-date from their doctors. Check whether the hospital and staff are following the COVID-19 infection protocol.
