Morphine for Pain Management

What is morphine?

Morphine is a pain reliever that can treat acute and chronic pain under prescription. It falls under the category of opioids, where there is an alteration in the way the brain processes and the nervous system reacts to pain.

What does morphine do?

Morphine impacts the central nervous system and manages the signals the brain sends through the nerves. Thus, morphine aids in changing and reducing the pain that one undergoes.

How much morphine for moderate pain?

Morphine for pain is effective in managing the condition. The starting dose of morphine is about 0.1 mg to 0.2 mg per kg, depending on the intensity of the pain. The reduction and increase in the dosage consumed are under prescription only.

Does morphine make you sleepy?

The first dose of morphine can make one feel sleepy and dizzy. Eventually, when the dosage increases, one could experience drowsiness, leading to the urge to rest and sleep. That is how one can experience sleepiness. If the sensation continues, consult a physician for further intake. There has to be a gradual reduction in the dosage and then bring the consumption of morphine to a halt. The abrupt withdrawal from morphine can lead to restlessness, irritability, anxiety, nausea, and loss of appetite.

Uses and precautions

Morphine comes under the group of narcotic analgesics. The purpose of morphine is to treat pain. While performing surgeries, morphine comes in use along with anesthetics and is used post-surgery to deal with pain.

  • Morphine is available as morphine tablets, capsules, and liquid injected into the body or consumed orally. Take as per prescription.
  • Morphine, when consumed in the form of tablets, should be taken entirely and cannot be crushed, chewed, or dissolved.
  • It may be fatal to crush morphine tablets and inject them into the veins. The appropriate forms should only be taken as prescribed and in their original state.
  • It is crucial to adhere precisely to the recommended morphine dosage and time frame, as it can be fatal.

Risk factors

Before consuming morphine, it is essential to know if the individual has any allergies or any reaction to any drugs or if the individual has:

  • Liver or kidney complications
  • Problem in urinating
  • Seizures
  • Brain tumor
  • Sleep apnea
  • Mental illness
  • Drug addiction
  • Asthma or difficulty breathing
  • Pregnant

By screening through the individual’s medical history, the physician can conclude if the individual and their body type will be able to process morphine for pain.

Do’s and Dont’s with morphine

  • Do not use morphine for more than the prescribed duration, as it can be addicting after a while. Morphine comes under the category of narcotics, and it can become an addiction.
  • Do not consume morphine with alcohol or drugs of any form, as it could lead to complications, impacting your breathing and making you feel dizzy.
  • Reduce the intake of morphine gradually and then bring it to a halt. Do not stop the intake abruptly after relieving the pain.
  • Proceeding with morphine consumption when one has a history of substance abuse can lead to addiction.
  • Consume only under prescription.

Morphine for pain works effectively with appropriate dosage under prescription. This blog hopes to bring awareness among people and is not a substitute for a physician. Please consult your healthcare provider before consuming morphine.
