Know More About Sleep Talking

Have you ever felt disturbed in the middle of the sleep like someone in your family whispered something slowly or loudly? You might or may be? Some people may even get scared terribly because of this behavior. Let us discuss some of the following facts about sleep talking in sleep. 

What is sleep talking?

Somniloquy or sleep talking is the abnormal behavior when someone mumbled during their sleep; often ends up in keeping your roommates or family members awake and disturbing their night. This is not considered a medical condition or any severe disease but still it has some many disadvantages. 

What are the stages of sleep talking?

The seriousness depends on the severity of the stage a person goes through. The talking may occur in any stages derived from the facts about talking in sleep. 

Stage 1 and 2:

The person might not be in deep sleep, so at this stage it is easier to predict their conversation. The voice may be clear, at times your roommate repeats what you whispered in the night and makes fun of it. 

Stage 3 and 4:

They may talk in the gibberish language that is hard to understand. The person will be in a deep sleep. Seems to be like moaning. 

Causes of Somniloquy

It is not the dream that causes sleep talking. It is harmless and not mentioned to be any medical condition, but some serious cases need to be treated by consulting a doctor. It is better to know the specific reason for sleep talking and then take medications accordingly. Let us discuss the type of sleep disorder and facts about talking in sleep. 

Sleep terrors

  • Sleep terrors are terrible and are difficult to handle. It causes screaming, frightening, and kicking. The toughest job is to wake up the sleeping person. 
  • Sleep terror, also known as night terrors, is a type of parasomnia (abnormal behavior during sleep) characterized by sudden episodes of intense fear, crying, and/or screaming during sleep. 
  • These episodes typically occur during the first few hours of the night and can last for several minutes. People experiencing sleep terrors may also thrash around, sweat, and have a rapid heartbeat.
  • Unlike nightmares, people who experience sleep terrors usually do not remember the event and may be difficult to wake up during an episode. Sleep terrors are more common in children than adults, but it can occur in adults as well.
  • It can be caused by various factors such as stress, sleep deviation, and certain medications.

REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD)

  • REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by vivid and physically acting out of dreams during REM sleep. 
  • This leads to potentially dangerous movements and actions, such as kicking, punching, or jumping out of bed. 
  • It is commonly associated with aging and can be a symptom of other neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease.
  • Treatment options include medications and therapy to manage symptoms and improve sleep safety. Consider a medical professional to know more about the treatment. 

Treatments for somniloquy

  • Follow any relaxation technique such as meditation, breathing exercise, and yoga.
  • Maintaining a healthy sleep pattern and the duration is the utmost important. Sleep for continuous hours is what experts suggest. 
  • Limiting the alcohol consumption before bed is necessary. 
  • Consider a health care provider if it is consistent and affects your mental health.
