Does Wearing Glasses Protect You from Coronavirus?

Researchers in China noticed odd information while analyzing the hospital data of patients with Coronavirus (COVID-19).

A research study JAMA Ophthalmology, says that since the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China December 2019, only a few people with glasses were admitted to the hospital suffering from the virus. When the researchers started to collect more information on the issue- only 16 of the 276 coronavirus patients wore glasses.

Wearing Glasses Protect You from Coronavirus

According to a study authors say, Wearing glasses is common among Chinese individuals of all ages. The author added, “However, since the outbreak of Covid-19 in Wuhan in December 2019, we observed that few patients with eyeglasses were admitted in the hospital ward.”

The eyes are covered by a very thin layer of skin to allow water, oxygen, food and light to enter the body. But the viruses have found a way to enter the body along with the particles. It is that eyeglasses act as a partial barrier, protecting eyes from the splatter of a cough or sneeze. Another explanation for the finding could be that people who wear glasses are less likely to rub their eyes with contaminated hands, so eyeglasses protect you from coronavirus.

Even if your hands get contaminated, follow the habit of regularly washing your hands, especially at this time of the global pandemic. Some doctors even advised their patients to avoid wearing contact lenses. They advised them to start wearing eyeglasses. Contact can get a lot of viruses inside the eyes, and dry the eyes and you will have to touch your eyes now and then.

If you touch your eyes without washing your hands, you are likely to get infected. Lens users are advised to follow a proper cleaning routine for their safety.
