Can Mouth Taping Help with Sleep

Mouth Taping For Better Sleep

Mouth taping, as it indicates, is simply closing one’s mouth with a skin-safe tape. This practice has become a viral trend and is taken up by some people as a home remedy. And, it leads us to the question, “Why do people practice it?”

To answer this question and a host of others, we have come up with this blog. Here, we will look into the factors that lead people to mouth-taping. We will also discuss the mouth-taping risks, and in addition, we will analyze the habit of mouth taping for better sleep.

Why do people adopt the habit of mouth-taping for better sleep?

While sleeping, we usually breathe through our noses. But many people are not able to do that, and so, they breathe through their mouths, and this can easily lead to a troubled sleep. Therefore, they cover their mouths with a tape so that they are forced to breathe through their noses. Also, many individuals switch to this practice to prevent snoring through the night, which is a chronic problem for lots of people.

Mouth taping risks

Mouth taping is not recommended by many doctors because they feel it is not always a safe practice. In other words, in some cases, it can be dangerous. It may result in obstructed breathing or lead to many other sleep disorders. Moreover, if people use the wrong type of tape, it can cause rashes or other allergic reactions.

Some resort to mouth taping when they are sick because of which they cannot breathe through their noses. However, if they take up this practice to avoid snoring, the snoring may stop, but more complicated issues might ensue.

Mouth taping for sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition where people are unable to breathe while sleeping. The breathing actually stops and then restarts and this cycle can occur many times while you sleep. Taping your mouth is sometimes practiced as a method to resolve sleep disorders like sleep apnea.

But, if you are suffering from any sleep disorders or issues, or sleeping for long hours during daytime, you will have to consult your doctor or healthcare provider. Based on their advice, you can take the recommended medication or change your sleep habits. To put it in a nutshell, refrain from mouth taping yourself or others just because you want to resolve sleep problems.

Does mouth taping improve sleep?

There is no scientific evidence that proves mouth taping can better your sleep at night. Lots of people think (wrongly) that it is a must-to-be-followed trend because it has been spreading like wildfire via social media. There may be a few mouth taping benefits, but there are more cons associated with it when compared to the pros. Moreover, some people tend to “mouth-puff.” Now, mouth-puffing is nothing but inhaling or breathing through the mouth despite the usage of tape that covers your mouth!

Can you practice mouth-taping? Is it safe?

Mouth taping must not be instigated without proper consultation with a doctor. There are many ways to cure sleep disorders or the habit of snoring, but mouth taping is not the best of them. In fact, if you are suffering from such disorders, you might be facing other underlying health problems without your knowledge. And, you need professional advice to solve these problems. Since the benefits of mouth taping for better sleep have not yet been scientifically proven, it would be best to avoid it for now.

Hope this blog clears your doubts about mouth taping and its effects. We also wish you a good night’s sleep so that you can wake up refreshed to face the day!
