Can Antibiotic Cycling Help Overcome Antibiotic Resistance?

Though Antibiotics help prevent millions of deaths each year, antibiotic-resistant bacteria or fungi can defeat the drugs designed to kill them. Antibiotic resistance is considered the biggest threat to food security and global health. It can affect anyone including the animal. It develops naturally because the misuse of antibiotics in people and animals is quickening the process. The increasing number of infections including tuberculosis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and salmonellosis became difficult to cure because antibiotics used to treat them seem less potent. Antibiotics resistance may lead to longer hospitalization, increased medical costs, and mortality.

What is Antibiotic Resistance?

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria and fungi develop the ability to defeat the drugs created to kill them. It simply means those germs can not be killed and can continue to develop. Infections created by antibiotic-resistant germs are dangerous, challenging, and sometimes impossible to treat. In some cases, antibiotic-resistant infections may lead to extended hospital stays, extra physician visits and turn out to be costly. Antibiotic resistance doesn’t mean your body is tuning to be resistant to antibiotics, it is the germs that became resistant to antibiotics that are created to destroy them. Not humans, only bacteria become antibiotic-resistant. These germs or bacterias can infect humans and animals. Infection caused by bacteria may be more difficult to treat. Scientists are required to improve the way it is directed to use. It can become a major threat, even if new drugs are produced without behavior change. Along with behavior change, experts should include actions to decrease the spread of infections through vaccination, good food hygiene, and handwashing.

Studies to Prevent the Antibiotic Resistance

Switching between antibiotics is a way to respond against the developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria. But the scientists behind the present research showed that only some bacteria can be operated this way, advising that antibiotic cycling may have a limited value. In this present study, scientists showed that antibiotic resistance includes physicians switching between antibiotics to beat antibiotic resistance.

AS stated by the Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United StatesTrusted Source, the 2019 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fungi and bacteria become resistant to antibiotics and cause the deaths of around 35,000 every year.

Reasons for Antibiotic Resistance

  • It may be caused by the overuse of antibiotics
  • Improper prescribing
  • Excess use of these medications in intensive livestock farming.

New antibiotics require more research as more infections are becoming more resistant to life-saving drugs.

How to Avoid Antibiotic Resistance

Prevent the spread

Preventing infection can also prevent antibiotic resistance. Several ways to avoid drug-resistant infections are safe food preparation, immunization, handwashing, and using antibiotics as prescribed.

Tracking

Tracking information about antibiotic-resistant and its causes is important. Scientists also need to find whether specific reasons or risk factors cause people to get resistant to infection. Finding these can help prevent the spread of resistant bacteria.

Improving Antibiotic Prescribing

In order to slow down the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, improving the way antibiotics are used. Avoid inappropriate and unnecessary use of antibiotics in humans and animals.

New Medicine

Antibiotic medicines can slow down the actions of bacteria, but don’t destroy them completely. Hence, it is needed to develop new antibiotics which help to prevent antibiotic resistance and also can track the growth of resistance.
