Yamanaka Factors

A new study published in “Nature Communications” has shown tissue regeneration can be accelerated by a newly found genetically modified molecular cell structure called Yamanaka factors (transcription factors).

A Japanese scientist named Yamanaka discovered a genetically engineered stem-cell transcription factor to help vacant cells copy the DNA structure of satellite cells to promote muscle regrowth.

Two mice trials were conducted using a niche-cell model of satellite cells found between connective tissues and the myofiber-cell model of satellite cells found underneath muscle fibers.

The myofiber-cell model proved to be a success. Further study revealed that a protein named Wnt4 was responsible for the loss of muscles. The myofiber model had eliminated the Wnt4 protein leading to accelerated muscle growth in the young and active mice. 

Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, a professor at Salk Institute, stated that “We could potentially use this technology to either directly reduce Wnt4 levels in skeletal muscle or to block the communication between Wnt4 and muscle stem cells.” 

Researchers are also working on mRNA structures to rejuvenate cells to aid in muscle and organ tissue regeneration.
